Documenting the personal spaces of creative individuals since 2008, photographer, author and illustrator Todd Selby started Selbz, a new accessories company, in 2013. In collaboration with Brother Vellies, a limited collection of unique, hand crafted wool socks and shearling house slippers were created as the perfect complement to our shoes. Utilizing the same care and attention to detail you’ve come to expect from Brother Vellies, the socks were hand knit in Kenya while the slippers were hand-crafted in South Africa using Kenyan sourced shearling. The Brother Vellies x Selbz Collection is available exclusively for purchase at United Arrows in Japan and MAC in San Francisco. Todd’s third book in ‘The Selby’ series, Fashionably Selby, was published in March 2014 and featured Brother Vellies Creative Director Aurora James alongside a colorful cast of fashion favorite’s including: Isabel Marant, Dries Van Noten and Oliver Rousteing of Balmain.
New York based artist Mickalene Thomas teamed up with Brother Vellies to create a 6 piece capsule collection that pays homage not only to the origins of our eponymous shoes, but her renowned paintings as well.
“Mickalene visited my studio to see the collection,” says Aurora James. “Through our mutual love of each other’s work, we decided this would be a fantastic opportunity to work together.”
The Mickalene Thomas x Brother Vellies collection promises not only durability, quality and attention to detail expected of our products, but an opportunity to own an exceptional piece of wearable art that is as unique as it is functional.
“I am honored to be working with an emerging brand on this new collection,” says Mickalene Thomas. “Brother Vellies is not only committed to creating jobs in South Africa, but also working directly with artisans who hand craft each pair to make them unique and one of a kind.”
Watch out for the Mickalene Thomas x Brother Vellies collection, launching summer 2014.
Darlene and Lizzy Okpo founded the New York based women’s wear collection William Okpo in 2010. Daughters of Nigerian immigrants, the Okpo sisters were motivated by the interplay of their parent’s personal style with American culture.
Uniting with Brother Vellies for a multi-season collaboration, the Okpo sisters and Aurora James have developed a distinctive collection that ranges from plastic oxfords to open chukkas. Meticulously hand-crafted in South Africa, the William Okpo x Brother Vellies collection has yielded some of our most daring styles yet.
“We came up with this last idea when we were in Nigeria together,” recalls Aurora James. “We basically chopped off the toe on our classic shoes and paired them with thick socks. I love collaborating with Lizzy and Darlene, we always have a ton of fun.”
“It’s always a pleasure collaborating with Aurora,” says Darlene Okpo. “There is never a dull moment and we’re always able to come up with amazing shoes.”
Brother Vellies full line, including the collaboration, is available for purchase at Darlene and Lizzy’s boutique in New Orleans, Exodus Goods.
